In the Autumn kids go back to school, sports seasons resume, and there are some incredibly fun holidays to spend with friends and family.
One of the most fun for kids (of all sizes and ages) is Halloween. Going from house to house to get candy – is many kids’ dream!
Here are some tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics to have a safe and exciting Halloween this year.
COSTUMES
Plan costumes that are bright and reflective.
Consider adding reflective tape or stripping to costumes and bags.
Consider non-toxic makeup and decorative hats instead of masks, which can limit or block eyesight.
When purchasing costumes, make sure there are labels clearly indicating they are flame resistant.
Do not use decorative contact lenses. They can cause pain, inflammation, and serious eye disorders and infections.
Review how to call 9-1-1 with children if they ever have an emergency or get lost.
HOME SAFETY
Parents should remove anything from the front porch and yard a child could trip over like garden hoses, bikes, toys, and lawn decorations.
Parents should check outdoor lights and replace burned out bulbs.
Restrain pets so they do not inadvertently jump on or bite a trick-or-treater or run away.
ON THE TRAIL
A parent or responsible adult should always accompany young children.
Have flashlights with fresh batteries for all children and their escorts.
Plan and review an acceptable route with older children going alone.
Only go to homes with a porch light on and never enter a home or car for a treat.
To avoid injury, remind trick-or-treaters:
Stay in a group and communicate where they will be going
Carry a cellphone for quick communication
Remain on well-lit streets and always use the sidewalk
Never cut across yards or use alleys
Only cross the street as a group in established crosswalks. Never cross between parked cars or out of driveways.
